I’m checking the car this weekend, tell me why this is a bad idea.
Actual link for the car:

That’s not a horrible idea. I love those. I considered a Mini last time I was shopping but I couldn’t find a Countyman S with brown leather and that the only one I wanted.

If I recall correctly, 2010 and earlier with the N14 had timing chain issues and many more. The later N18 is the one to go for in the R56-based models.

I think you are correct.
Try to avoid 2nd gen Minis would be my advise. Those PSA motors are finiky.
EDIT: I mean anything based on the 2nd gen mini cooper

If I had to get one, I’d gladly go for a 2013 only.

Buy a 1st gen Mini! Those are awesome!! (I may be biased)

I’m a sucker for the F56.
I’d get one if the closest Mini dealership were closer than 3 hours away.

I’m a bit skeptical about maintaining the newer one since they now have a BMW engine.

Oh, I’ve heard great things about them from family and friends.

Noted. I need to drive a F56 when I get a chance, still haven’t driven one of those.

It’s ugly. :p

If you have to get a MINI, get one of the original actually-mini ones, which, of course, vary by make. Don’t buy the decontented style-over-substance facsimile that BMW hawks.
That said, I do like the barn doors in the Clubman, even though they’re a significant blind spot. After owning a first-gen XC90 for a week and having lots of exposure to other hatchbacks/wagons, I’m convinced that the optimum rear door(s?) configurations are clamshell (e.g. first-gen XC90, Range Rovers - actual RRs, not the Sport or Evoque) and clamshell-over-barn door, like the Ford Excursion (which would only be bettered by a fold-down seat for tailgating, but at least the bumper acts as a good footrest).

We’re On our 3rd MINI (had 2 for a while), all manual.
2008 R56 Mellow Yellow. Made it over 100k no major problems out of warranty. Traded for the 2013.
2011 R55 Red; traded at 85k because oddly the final drive gear started getting noisy. Traded for the GTI.
2013 R56s Orange - actually has had the fewest problems of all (better than the GTI even) and going strong at 75k.
Actually never had any engine problems other than coolant leaks (11, plastic thermostat) and oil pump (13). We love(d) them all and these were/are driven bat out of hell in Chicagoland.
I think keeping after timing chain tensioners and intake carbon cleaning are the main issues with N14 S engines.

DO IT. I loved my clubman. Not as pretty as the regular 2-door but that’s a great color.

Where to begin?
Timing chains that fail, thermostats that fail. Valve covers that fail. Hood releases that fail. Power windows that break. Engines with dipsticks you can’t read that burn 1qt of oil every thousand miles. Clutches that go early. Bushings that go bad. Ac that breaks.
90% of that is just what I have experienced on my car.

Can’t find a nice Clubman in N18 flavor, and the normal ones are just too plain, purchase aborted.

I’m never going back to a sedan or coupe after owning the Passat, hatch is best.

Well, purchase aborted.

Ohhh yeah. My wife didn’t understand my dissatisfaction with sedans until we got her CX-5, and now she sort of gets it. While I did miss the storage space and visibility, I mostly missed having a rear window wiper. I adore just how huuuuuge the XC90's rear wiper is.

Yeah. Honestly, If you are going hot hatch, go fiesta or focus. The cooper and the GTI are hunks of shit.
